I think that there is a lack of non-white fantasy characters in the arts and so I kinda feel that it is my responsibility, as a black artist to try to add to the diversity in imagery. People, especially children I believe, need to be able to see people looking like themselves in popular culture, the media, etc and so although my art isn't perfect and I still have some ways to go in terms of personal growth and improvement, I think that my black mermaid is part of a necessary contribution to the diversification of people portrayed in art. I looked at the Evian mermaid as a reference image when painting her.

I think Black Panther: Wakanda Forever might end up setting the scene for the appearance of African Cyborg Mermaids since Princess Shuri, Riri WIlliams, and their team may now want to develop high-performance cybernetic mermaid tails and other bionanotech treatments so they can visit Talokan without having to use deep diving equipment.
